ChatGPT Pro API Credits: Get Up to $500/Month Free

On October 28, 2026, OpenAI started giving eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers up to $500 per month in free API credits (OpenAI API Changelog). You link your subscription to an API organization once, and credits arrive automatically each time the subscription renews. This guide covers how much you get, who qualifies, how to claim, and how far the money actually goes, using only OpenAI's official documentation.

The short answer: Pro gets its plan price back, Business gets $20–$100 per seat (capped at $500)

Pro subscribers receive the same amount as their plan ($100, $200 or $500). Business workspaces receive $20 per paid Standard seat or $100 per paid Premium seat, capped at $500 per workspace per month (API credits for ChatGPT subscribers). Plus, Go, Free and Enterprise are not eligible.

Three caveats matter most: unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, the first grant is prorated, and Codex usage through API keys is not covered.

Credit amounts by plan

ChatGPT subscription

Monthly API credits

Notes

Pro ($100 tier)

$100

Same as the plan price

Pro ($200 tier)

$200

Same as the plan price

Pro ($500 tier)

$500

Same as the plan price

Business Standard

$20 per paid Standard seat

Pooled per workspace, capped at $500/month

Business Premium

$100 per paid Premium seat

Same cap

For Business, the $500 cap is reached at 25 Standard seats or 5 Premium seats; adding more seats beyond that adds no credits. Workspaces that pay annually upfront receive the full year's grant in one issuance, with an annual cap of $6,000.

Who is eligible

  • An active, paid ChatGPT Pro or Business subscription that is at least seven days old. Free trials and complimentary subscriptions don't qualify.
  • You own both the ChatGPT subscription (or Business workspace) and the API organization that receives the credits.
  • The same email address is used for your ChatGPT account and the API account.

The second rule is where teams get stuck. If finance owns the Business workspace and a developer created the API organization, you cannot link them as-is. One person, with one email, needs to own both.

How to claim (from ChatGPT or from API Platform)

Both paths link the same benefit. If you are new to the API, you can link your subscription to your Personal API Organization.

Starting from ChatGPT

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT with the account that owns the eligible subscription.
  2. For Pro, open Settings → Billing. For Business, open your workspace's billing settings or the Admin Console.
  3. Find the API credits benefit and start the claim flow.
  4. Review the API organization that will receive the credits (choose one if you own several).
  5. Confirm to activate.

Starting from API Platform

  1. Sign in to API Platform with the email tied to your subscription.
  2. Select the API organization that should receive the credits.
  3. Open Billing and find the API credit benefit.
  4. Select the ChatGPT subscription or Business workspace to link.
  5. Confirm to activate.

Credits show up in the API Platform billing overview. They apply only to the linked organization, so use a project API key from that organization. To change the receiving organization, you have to contact support.

How much API usage do $100, $200 and $500 buy?

Using Standard pricing from OpenAI's pricing page (inputs up to 272K tokens, no caching) and a typical 4:1 input-to-output ratio (feed documents in, get summaries or decisions out):

Model (input / output per 1M tokens)

$100 buys

$200

$500

GPT-6 Luna ($0.10 / $0.50)

444M in + 111M out

889M in + 222M out

2.2B in + 556M out

GPT-6.1 Terra ($1 / $5)

44M in + 11M out

89M in + 22M out

222M in + 56M out

GPT-6.1 Sol ($2 / $10)

22M in + 5.6M out

44M in + 11M out

111M in + 28M out

GPT-6 Astra ($10 / $50)

4.4M in + 1.1M out

8.9M in + 2.2M out

22M in + 5.6M out

The formula is credits ÷ (4 × input price + 1 × output price) = number of "4M in + 1M out" bundles. On Terra one bundle costs $9, so $100 buys about 11. Reasoning tokens are billed as output, so higher reasoning effort means less usage per dollar.

For a rough feel: if one task is 5,000 input tokens plus 500 output tokens, it costs about $0.0075 on Terra, so $100 covers more than 10,000 tasks. On Astra the same task costs about $0.075, one tenth as many. High-volume, lightweight jobs such as ticket classification or report summaries fit comfortably inside even the $100 Pro grant. For how Terra compares with the other GPT-6 models, see our GPT-6.1 Terra pricing guide.

What the credits cover, and what they don't

Covered (paid API Platform usage)

Not covered

Responses API; Agents API (including OpenAI-hosted sandbox charges); Decisions API; GPT-Live and the Realtime API; Images API; built-in tools such as web search, file search and Code Interpreter, with their usage and storage charges

Codex usage through API keys; any increase to ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits

So this is a benefit for people building with the API, not a way to stretch your ChatGPT or Codex allowance.

When credits run out, or you change plans

  • Free credits are used first, then any purchased credits.
  • With no purchased credits left, requests fail with HTTP 429 (credit_balance_exhausted). Without purchased credits or Auto Recharge, you won't be billed by surprise.
  • Cancelling doesn't revoke credits already issued; you can use them until they expire. New grants simply stop.
  • Downgrading to Plus, Go or Free removes the link at the end of the billing cycle. The same happens if a Business subscription moves to Enterprise.
  • Moving from Pro to Business ends the Pro link. After the Business subscription has been active for seven days, the workspace owner can link again.
  • Upgrading your Pro plan mid-cycle can add prorated credits for the rest of that cycle (still capped at $500).

Because the failure mode is a 429, set up an alert for failed requests before you put this into a real workflow.

Should you upgrade for this benefit?

  • You already pay for the API: if you also pay for Pro or Business, linking takes minutes and lowers your API bill. There is little reason not to.
  • You don't use the API yet: don't upgrade just for this. But if you already pay for Pro or Business, you now have a monthly $100–$500 budget to try one small internal automation.
  • Small Business workspace: five Standard seats means $100/month. You reach the $500 cap at 25 Standard or 5 Premium seats.

Summary

  • Since October 28, 2026, eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers get up to $500/month in free API credits.
  • Pro: same as the plan price ($100/$200/$500). Business: $20 per Standard seat or $100 per Premium seat, capped at $500 per workspace.
  • Requirements: subscription at least 7 days old, you own both the subscription and the API organization, same email. No rollover.
  • Codex via API keys is excluded, and ChatGPT limits don't increase.
  • On Terra, $100 buys roughly 44M input + 11M output tokens at a 4:1 ratio.

FAQ

What are API credits for ChatGPT subscribers?

A benefit OpenAI launched on October 28, 2026. Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can link their subscription to an API organization they own and receive free API credits every billing cycle, up to $500 per month.

Can ChatGPT Plus or Free users claim the credits?

No. Only paid ChatGPT Pro ($100, $200 and $500 tiers) and Business subscriptions qualify. Plus, Go, Free and Enterprise are not eligible, and free trials or complimentary subscriptions do not count.

Do unused credits roll over?

No. Unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Your first grant is prorated for the time left in your current billing cycle.

What happens when the free credits run out?

If you have purchased API credits, usage continues on those. If no credits remain, API requests fail with HTTP 429 and the error code credit_balance_exhausted. You can add paid credits or set up Auto Recharge to keep going.

Can I use the credits for Codex?

Codex usage through API keys is not covered, and the credits do not raise your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits. They cover paid API Platform usage such as the Responses, Agents, Decisions, Realtime and Images APIs.
