Gmail Storage Full? How to Free Space and Get Email Back

When Gmail says your storage is full, the most important thing to know is this: you can no longer send or receive email, and messages sent to you go back to the sender. A client's invoice or a quote can bounce without you ever seeing it.

Gmail is not always the cause. A free Google Account has 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, so phone photo backups often fill it up. Below are the fastest way to start receiving mail again, how to find what is using the space, and why deleting does not always free space right away — all based on Google's Gmail Help.

What stops when your storage is full

Service

Effect at the storage limit (per Google Help)

Gmail

You can't send or receive emails. Messages sent to you go back to the sender

Google Drive

You can't upload or create files

Google Photos

Photos and videos stop backing up

Google also states that if you are over the limit for 2 years, your content in Gmail, Drive and Photos may be deleted. Leaving an old account full is riskier than it looks.

Get email working again: empty Trash and Spam

Google calls this the quickest way to recover space. Items in these folders still count against your storage until you permanently clear them.

  1. Open Gmail on a computer and go to Trash
  2. Click Empty Trash now in the notice at the top
  3. Do the same for Spam
  4. Drive and Photos have their own trash — empty those too

Normally, deleted Gmail messages stay in Trash for 30 days and are then permanently deleted (Gmail Help). So "I deleted it but nothing changed" usually means the mail is still sitting in Trash.

Still full? Give the counter time

Google says to run an advanced cleanup if the account is still full after 30 minutes, and that it can take up to 48–72 hours for storage to update after deleting many files at once. Don't keep deleting important mail just because the number hasn't moved yet.

Find what is using the space

Deleting a few emails with huge attachments frees far more than deleting thousands of small ones. Paste these into the Gmail search bar (examples from Google Help):

Search

Finds

has:attachment larger:10M

Emails with attachments over 10 MB

filename:.pdf larger:5M

Emails with PDF attachments over 5 MB

older_than:2y has:attachment

Emails with attachments older than two years

Select the results, delete them, and then empty Trash again. Save any attachment you still need to your computer first. For more on Gmail search operators, see why Gmail filters stop working.

Three things people miss in Drive and Photos

  • Large Drive files: click Storage in Drive's left menu to list files from largest to smallest
  • Duplicates: Drive has no built-in duplicate finder. Switch to list view, sort by Name, and look for files ending in "(1)" or "Copy of"
  • Old device backups and hidden app data: check Backups in your storage page and Manage apps in Drive settings. WhatsApp backups on Android also count

Stop it from filling up again

If heavy attachments are the problem, save them to your computer or a shared drive and delete the email, and send large files as Drive links instead of attachments. If photos are the problem, review your phone's backup settings. If you still need more room, Google One adds storage shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos.

Summary

  • Full storage stops Gmail: you can't send or receive, and incoming mail bounces back to the sender
  • The 15 GB is shared by Gmail, Drive and Photos
  • Empty Trash and Spam first — deleted mail counts until permanently cleared
  • Use has:attachment larger:10M to find the biggest emails
  • Storage can take 30 minutes to 72 hours to update; 2 years over the limit may mean deletion
