watchOS 27 Not Showing or Stuck? Fixes in Order

If you open Software Update and watchOS 27 is not there, or the download starts and then stalls, you are dealing with two different problems. When the update does not show up, the cause is almost always that your Apple Watch model is not supported, or that your paired iPhone is not on iOS 27 yet. When it stalls, the fix depends on where it stopped. This guide follows the order that saves the most time, using only Apple's own support pages, so you do not unpair or erase the watch when a restart would have been enough.

Check these 3 things first

  1. Is your Apple Watch on the watchOS 27 list? If it is not, the update will never appear, whatever you try.
  2. Is your iPhone on iOS 27? Apple states that watchOS 27 requires iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, with iOS 27 (Apple Support: Update your Apple Watch). Update the iPhone first; this alone solves most "not showing" cases.
  3. Battery and Wi-Fi. Apple asks that the watch be at least 50 percent charged, that the iPhone be connected to Wi-Fi, and that you keep the iPhone near the watch throughout the update.

iPhone requirement

iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, with iOS 27

Source: Apple watchOS product page. Series 8 and earlier, the original Ultra and SE (2nd generation) are not on the list, so watchOS 27 will not appear on them. That is not a fault or a setting you missed, and the watch keeps working normally for time, notifications and Activity.

To check your model, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and go to My Watch > General > About, or open Settings > General > About on the watch itself.

Still not showing? Try these in order

  1. Check from the iPhone's Apple Watch app: My Watch > General > Software Update. The list on the watch sometimes lags behind.
  2. Restart both the iPhone and the Apple Watch. A half-connected pairing can fail to fetch update information.
  3. Reconnect Wi-Fi or switch networks. Office and public Wi-Fi can block the download. Cellular data is not a substitute.
  4. Free up storage on the watch (Settings > General > Storage). Removing music, turning off photo sync or deleting some apps helps.
  5. Leave the watch on its charger for a while. Downloads and installs progress most reliably while charging.

Unpairing is the last resort: it erases the watch and restores from an iPhone backup, which takes time. Try the five steps above first.

Stuck or slow? Decide by where it stopped

Apple says an update "could take from several minutes to an hour." That hour is the line between waiting and acting.

Where it stopped

Likely state

What to do

Download bar not moving

Wi-Fi not getting through

Reconnect or change networks, then retry

"Verifying" for a long time

Connection or storage problem

Check the connection, free storage, retry

Progress wheel, under an hour

Installing normally

Leave it on the charger and do not touch it

No progress for over an hour

Install may have failed

Restart the watch and run the update again

Stuck on the Apple logo

Problem on the watch

Force restart; contact Apple Support if it persists

The rule is simple: if the progress indicator moves at all, wait; if nothing moves for more than an hour, restart. If you want to time those intervals instead of guessing, our free online timer runs in a browser tab.

Interrupted or won't start: delete the update file and try again

Apple's support page gives two separate fixes (Update your Apple Watch):

Symptom

Apple's steps

Update fails or stops partway

Put the watch on its charger, restart the Apple Watch, restart the paired iPhone, then try the update again

Update won't start

Apple Watch app on iPhone > General > Storage > delete the update file, then download the update again

Updates are most often interrupted when the iPhone or watch is restarted mid-update or the Apple Watch app is closed. Apple asks you to keep the watch on its charger, not restart either device and not quit the Apple Watch app until it finishes. Tapping Update Tonight and leaving both devices charging overnight is the least interruption-prone option.

No iPhone nearby? Update on the watch itself

Connect the watch to Wi-Fi, open Settings, tap General > Software Update, then Install. Keep it on the charger and do not restart it; it restarts on its own when the update completes. If updating on the watch stalls, try again from the iPhone's Apple Watch app, and vice versa.

The next round of updates is already in testing: Apple released the 27.3 betas for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS on November 3. For the likely release window, see when iOS 27.3 is expected to be released.

What not to do

  • Do not power off the watch or take it off the charger while it is installing.
  • Do not unpair while it only looks stuck; unpairing erases the watch.
  • Do not force the update below 50 percent battery.
  • Do not use unofficial "force update" tools.

If you manage several Apple Watches and iPhones at work and the same questions keep coming back, standardizing device and network settings usually reduces them. We also help small teams with this kind of IT and AI setup, and would be glad to hear from you if it would be useful.

FAQ

Why is watchOS 27 not showing up on my Apple Watch?

In most cases it is not a fault. Either the Apple Watch model is not on the watchOS 27 compatibility list, or the paired iPhone is not yet on iOS 27. The next most common cause is not meeting Apple's conditions: at least 50 percent charge and an iPhone connected to Wi-Fi.

Which Apple Watch models support watchOS 27?

According to Apple's watchOS 27 page: Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4. The watch must be paired with an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 27.

How long does an Apple Watch update take?

Apple says it could take from several minutes to an hour. If the progress indicator is still moving, keep waiting with the watch on its charger. If nothing has moved for more than an hour, restart the watch and try again.

What should I do if the Apple Watch update won't start?

Apple's fix is to delete the downloaded update file: open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap General, then Storage, delete the update file, and download the update again.

Can I update my Apple Watch without my iPhone?

Yes. Connect the watch to Wi-Fi, open Settings on the watch, tap General, then Software Update, and tap Install. Keep the watch on its charger and do not restart it until the update finishes.
